چکیده

This conceptual paper is cross-disciplinary, based on systems thinking and organisational learning theories. The paper examines critical development of the systems theory from hard systems thinking to soft systems thinking, the latter being the foundation of the organisational learning theory. Especially, this paper explores one key imperative of learning organisations: empowerment, which is closely linked to positive organisational emotions toward active and positive behaviour associated with learning. This essentially requires further attention to the soft element of systems thinking, the ‘softness’ being not only people’s appreciation of facts based on personal, institutional or cultural factors, but also emotions. Through a comparison of the problem-solving and the enhanced learning approach, this paper taps into the emotional aspect of learning systems and elaborates on the systems thinking theory with a subtle touch of ‘softness’, which is the mechanism to trigger proactive learning systems.

Softness Haptic Display Device for Human - Computer Interaction

In the field of virtual reality and teleoperation, haptic interaction between human operator and a computer or telerobot plays an increasingly important role in performing delicate tasks, such as robotic telesurgery, virtual reality based training systems for surgery, virtual reality based rehabilitation systems (Dario et al, 2003) (Taylor, Stoianovici, 2003) (Popescu, et al, 2000), etc. These ...

Softness discrimination with a tool.

The abilities of humans to discriminate the softness of rubber objects of differing compliance with a hand-held tool (a stylus) was measured under experimental conditions that differed as to how the tool was used and the kind of sensory information available. When the subject actively tapped or pressed the compliant objects, they discriminated softness as well by means of a stylus as they did b...

Soft Cells for Programmable Self-Assembly of Robotic Modules

Programmable self-assembly of chained robotic systems holds potential for the automatic construction of complex robots from a minimal set of building blocks. However, current robotic platforms are limited to modules of uniform rigidity, which results in a limited range of obtainable morphologies and thus functionalities of the system. To address these challenges, we investigate in this paper th...

Active Connection Mechanism for Soft Modular Robots

To date, most modular robotic systems lack flexibility when increasing the number of modules due to their hard building blocks and rigid connection mechanisms. In order to improve adaptation to environmental changes, softness at the module level might be beneficial. However, coping with softness requires a fundamental rethinking of the way modules are built. A major challenge is to develop a co...

Synthesis of soft colloids with well-controlled softness.

We report a novel method to prepare soft colloids with well-controlled softness. The softness of the colloids was characterised by atomic force microscopy and rheometry. Possible applications of such soft colloids in uniform particle coatings are demonstrated.
